You only need to apply for this number once, no matter how many companies you are a director for.

Some background for you:
Shareholders, employees, creditors, consumers, external administrators and regulators are entitled to know the names and certain details of the directors of a company.

All directors are required by law to verify their identity with ABRS (Australian Business Registry Services) before receiving a director ID.

This is important because it will help to:

  • prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities;
  • make it easier for external administrators and regulators to trace directors’ relationships with companies over time; and
  • identify and eliminate director involvement in unlawful activity, such as illegal phoenix activity.

Things to know:

  • You need to apply for your own director ID;
  • You only need to apply for your director ID once, no matter how many companies you are a director for; and
  • If you are not appointed a director within the 12 months of receiving your director ID, the director ID will be cancelled. When you reapply, you will be issued the same number.

ASIC ReASIC Registry Fees Reform

Patricia Holdings welcomes the reforms to registry fees announced in the latest 2022-23 federal budget.

Fees traditionally paid to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) for company searches on its website will be removed from September 2023, when the new “Australia’s Business Registers” online via the ABRS digital platform is due to go live.

The announcement in the 2022-23 federal budget papers brings Australia into line with other countries such as the US and Britain, which have made company information freely available for some time.

The budget announcement also included the following changes:

  • Removal of fees for company searches conducted on the new registry platform;
  • Removal of late fees associated with company annual review fees; and
  • Reducing the number of fees paid for ad hoc lodgements.

We welcome these changes as they would reduce significant costs when making requests for routine information such as company ownership and legal structures, office addresses and financial results. These changes are anticipated to save Australians and their businesses $64.9 million over 3 years from 2023-24.

Please feel free to reach out to our team if you have any questions on the ASIC fee reform.
